Pink bits
These karate-chop cardboard assemblages were created with high energy. The process began by moving my hands automatically, responding to the tactile feedback of the cardboard being cut between the scissor blades, spurred on by the sawing sounds, welcoming whatever shapes emerged. This somatic process served to get me out of my head, let go of control and any preconceived ideas of what the outcome should be.
The process played out in a sequence of: chop, compose, paint, dry, rearrange, staple, hang, curate. I played with the compositions over and over, to see what stories emerged. Similar to crafting written prose — observing how different words feel together and how the meaning shifts with different configurations. The symbols that have emerged tell me stories both as individual hieroglyphs, and together compiled into a sentence.
The name ‘pink bits’, assigned through association, opens up a conversation about owning my own narrative.
